बाल विवाह और बाल श्रमिक बचपन एक ऐसी उम्र है, जहां बच्चे को खेलने, सीखने और जीवन का आनंद लेने शारीरिक एवं मानसिक विकास के अवसर प्राप्त होने चाहिए। ताकि उसका मानसिक और शारीरिक विकास उपयुक्त तरीके से हो पाए। परंतु अनेक देशों में परंपरागत सामाजिक रिवाज अथवा आर्थिक कारणों से कई बच्चे अपने बचपन का आनंद नहीं ले पाते हैं। उन्हें बाल विवाह अथवा बाल श्रम के लिए मजबूर किया जाता है। बाल विवाह का रिवाज भारत के कई भागों में रहा है और अभी भी जारी है। जबकि यह गैरकानूनी हैं। और इसमें भाग लेने वालों को दंडित किया जा सकता है। बहुत छोटी उम्र में छोटी उम्र में बच्चे शारीरिक और मानसिक रूप से अपरिपक्व होते है। इस अवस्था में विवाह स्वास्थ्य संबंधी समस्यायें पैदा करता है और मानसिक आघात पहुंचाता है। उचित मानसिक विकास न होने के कारण वे युवावस्था में सनाज को उचित योगदान नहीं दे पाते ।

बाल श्रम बढ़ती जनसंख्या के पालन-पोषण के लिए संसाधनों के उपलब्ध न होने का स्पष्ट परिणाम है। कई गरीब परिवारों में अधिक बच्चों को काम के लिए अधिक हाथ उपलब्ध होना' माना जाता है। बाल श्रमिक कम मजदूरी पर उपलब्ध होते हैं, इसलिए कई उद्योग बच्चों को नौकरी देते हैं यद्यपि ऐसा करना कानूनन अपराध है। गलीचे बुनना एक उद्योग है जहाँ बड़ी संख्या में बाल श्रमिक काम करते हैं। इसकी वजह उनकी छोटी और मृदुल उँगलियाँ मानी जाती हैं, जो बुनाई में सहायक होती हैं। यह श्रम, बच्चों की शारीरिक व मानसिक वृद्धि जरूरी अवश्यक है किंतु यह बच्चों को खेल व पढ़ाई जैसी गतिविधियों से दूर करता है।
